FAQs about discounts and percentages

How do I calculate a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then subtract it. A 25% discount on 2,000 saves 500, so you pay 1,500.

How do I find what percentage one number is of another?

Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 out of 120 is (30 ÷ 120) × 100 = 25%.

How do I work out a percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. A rise from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase.

How is percentage change different from percentage points?

Percentage change is relative to the starting value, while percentage points are a simple difference between two percentages. Going from 10% to 15% is a 5 percentage-point rise but a 50% increase.

Can I use this for marks or scores?

Yes. Use the “percentage of” tool with your marks as the part and the total as the whole to get your score percentage.

Does it round the results?

Money is rounded to whole units and percentages to two decimals, which is accurate enough for everyday use.
