How mileage is calculated

Mileage is simply distance divided by fuel:

Mileage (km/L) = Distance covered ÷ Fuel used

L/100km is the same data the other way round (litres ÷ distance × 100), and cost per km is the fuel price divided by your km/L. For the truest figure, measure across a full tank rather than a single short trip.

FAQs about mileage

How do I calculate my vehicle’s mileage?

Divide the distance covered by the fuel used. If you drove 540 km on 30 litres, your mileage is 540 ÷ 30 = 18 km/L.

What is the most accurate way to measure mileage?

Use the full-tank (brim-to-brim) method: fill the tank completely, note the odometer, drive normally, then refill completely and divide the distance covered by the litres added at the second fill.

What is a good mileage figure?

As a rough guide: petrol cars 15–20 km/L, diesel cars 18–25 km/L, motorcycles 40–60 km/L, and scooters 35–50 km/L. Higher is better.

What is the difference between km/L and L/100km?

km/L tells you how far you travel on one litre, so higher is better. L/100km tells you how many litres you burn over 100 km, so lower is better. This tool shows both.

Why is my mileage lower than the company figure?

Company figures come from controlled tests. City traffic, short trips, heavy loads, air-conditioning, under-inflated tyres, and hard driving all reduce real-world mileage.

How can I improve my mileage?

Keep tyres at the correct pressure, service the vehicle on time, avoid sharp acceleration and braking, remove extra weight, and hold a steady speed.
