How much fuel you need

Litres required = Distance ÷ Mileage

The distance divided by your km/L gives the litres the trip will use. Multiply that by the fuel price for the cost. On long highway runs, keep a little extra in reserve for traffic and detours.

FAQs about fuel required

How much fuel do I need for a trip?

Divide the distance by your mileage. For a 100 km drive at 18 km/L you need 100 ÷ 18 = 5.56 litres.

How do I know my mileage?

Use the mileage calculator with the full-tank method, or check your recent fuel logs. Most petrol cars manage 15–20 km/L and diesel cars 18–25 km/L.

Should I add a buffer?

Yes. Traffic, detours, and air-conditioning raise consumption, so it is wise to keep 10–15% extra fuel in the tank, especially on highways with few pumps.

Does this work for a round trip?

Yes. Turn on the round trip option and the distance is doubled before the litres are worked out.

Can I use it for CNG?

Yes — enter your km/kg figure in place of km/L and the result will be in kg of CNG.

Why is my real consumption higher?

City driving, heavy loads, under-inflated tyres, and hard acceleration all cut efficiency, so you may use more fuel than the ideal figure suggests.
